How to Get to the Middle Fork American River
Most people use Auburn as a reference point for their Middle Fork of the American River trips. It is the closest city to most put-ins, and it has many hotels, restaurants, and wineries.
From San Francisco:
Take I-80 E out of San Francisco. Follow for 117 miles, following signs for Reno. Past Sacramento, take the Maple St exit into Auburn.
From Sacramento:
Take I-80BUS E out of the city towards Reno. Exit onto Maple St toward Auburn.
From Reno/North Lake Tahoe:
Take I-80 W southwest towards Sacramento. Follow for 98 miles. Exit onto CA-193/CA-49 S towards Placerville. Turn right onto Lincoln Way.
From South Lake Tahoe:
Take US-50 W towards Sacramento and follow for 57 miles. Turn right onto Spring St; after .2 miles, turn left onto CA-49 N and follow for 7.7 miles and follow directions “From Placervile.”
From Placerville:
Take CA-49 N northwest out of Placerville. Turn right onto Coloma Rd/Golden Chain Hwy N and continue to follow for 15.2 miles. Turn right onto Lincoln Way.
